Carolina Canopy – Best Laid Plans
This Carolina Canopy workshop is targeted to designers (engineers and landscape architects), planners, urban foresters/arborists, landscape contractors or others who may be involved in designing, reviewing, inspecting and installing landscapes per approved construction site plans.
8:00-8:30am – Registration
8:30-8:45am – Welcome/Introduction to Best Green Infrastructure Practices for Urban Landscapes: Site Plan Review
Dr. Barbara Fair, NC State University; Jennifer Rall, Certified Arborist; Jim Morris, City of Durham
Dr. Fair will give a brief introduction to the Green Infrastructure Alliance, and Jennifer and Jim will give a brief background into the development of the Best Green Infrastructure Practices for Urban Landscapes: Site Plan Review booklet.
8:45-9:45am – Looking Beyond the Landscape Plan
Andy Piper, City of High Point and Jim Morris, City of Durham
Andy and Jim will discuss how reviewing landscape plans should involve more than just checking for compliance with landscaping requirements. In the process, they will also explore the relationships between ordinance standards, plant lists, grading/erosion control plans, utility plans, and plan details/specifications.

10:00-11:00am – Right Plant Right Place
Katie Rose Levin, Leaf & Limb
Just because it looks good on paper doesn’t mean it will translate well in the real world. Katie Rose will discuss how selecting the right plant species during the design phase, and what plan reviewers and installers should be aware of, to avoid future conflicts with the built environment while ensuring a healthy, functional landscape.
11:00am-12:00pm – Inspection and Follow Up care
Jennifer Rall, Certified Arborist and Danny VanDevender, Landscape Design of Goldsboro
Landscape inspections should be more than just counting the number of plants and ensuring it matches the approved site plan. Jennifer and Danny will discuss the common components of a landscape inspection and the critical role landscape contractors play in a successful inspection and follow-up care.
