Our urban trees yield many values for our social communities. From filtering air and water of pollutants to shading our meditative sits for mental health, trees daily shower us with numerous benefits.
Tree ordinances are one powerful tool to help communities legally protect their favored trees. In recent years, the North Carolina Urban Forest Council hosted five webinars, during which presenters discussed the steps municipalities should complete when developing an effective tree protection ordinance.

8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tree Ordinance 201: Day to Day Processes
Now that your community has passed a tree ordinance, how do you incorporate these requirements into your existing administrative procedures? For instance, how will you process submittals, checklists, plan reviews, comments, permitting, site inspections, and close outs? Keith will discuss some key points during the development process (and after the fact) where tree preservation frequently goes wrong, and how to prevent such errors so that your community can achieve better tree outcomes.

9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The Critical Link: Integrating Tree Ordinances with Urban Forest Management Plans
No matter how thoughtful the language is of your tree ordinance, you must integrate the legal policy with your community’s urban forest management plan. Linking the two documents is critical to ensure all future development plans incorporate your tree protection goals. Joseph will draw from his extensive experience as a consultant to help you follow through with this step that is often overlooked.
