Carolina Canopy - Understanding and Managing 5 NC Tree Pests
Jul 28, 2025
9:00 a.m. - Noon
Location: JC Raulston Arboretum - 4415 Beryl Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606
Workshop Agenda
The goal of this Carolina Canopy Workshop is to inform arborists; landscape contractors, architects, and managers; municipal planners; and pesticide licensees about pests that affect trees where we live, work, play. Presentations will review pest background, current status, current research, and management techniques. Presentations will include information about hemlock woolly adelgid, emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, elm zigzag sawfly, and spotted lanternfly.
8:30 – 9:00 a.m.: Registration Check In and Welcome
9:00 – 9:30 a.m.: Introduction to the Biology and Management of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid This presentation will provide a brief overview of the origins, biology, and impacts of the invasive insect hemlock woolly adelgid and its management on hemlocks in urban and forest landscapes. IPM tools including chemical and biological controls, genetic tactics, and silvicultural strategies will be covered. Dr. Robert Jetton, Associate Professor, NC State University Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources
9:30 – 10:00 a.m.: Emerald Ash Borer Signs and Symptoms, Life Cycle, and Usage of Biological Control It'll be about what to look for when checking trees for the presence of emerald ash borer, the life cycle of the emerald ash borer and how it varies across different latitudes, and how biological control can be used, either by itself or in synergy with other control methods, to lower EAB densities. Pamela Zader, Master's Student, NC State University Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources
10:00 – 10:30 a.m.: Chemical Control of Emerald Ash Borer and Alternative Strategies to Save North American Ash Current chemical control options for emerald ash borer will be discussed along with pro's and con's to each. Additionally, ongoing research into genetic resistance, environmental factors, and the use of citizen science will be presented to show potential options for the future of EAB management. Jonathan Kressuk, Graduate Student, NC State University Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources
10:30 – 11:00 a.m.: Management of the Asian Longhorned Beetle The presentation will cover the background and current pest status of the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB), an invasive wood-boring beetle which attacks a wide variety of hardwood trees, especially maple trees (Acer spp.). While this pest is not in North Carolina yet, there will be a particular focus on the management of ALB in Charleston County, South Carolina, which is the location of the newest and most southern infestation in the United States. Courtney Johnson, Graduate Research and Extension Assistant NC State University, Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources
11:00 – 11:30 a.m.: Understanding Elm Zigzag Sawfly: Identification and management of a new invasive pest This talk will focus on elm zigzag sawfly, one of North Carolina’s newest invasive insects. It will explore identification of the pest and management options available to landowners. Delaney Serpan, Ph.D. Student, NC State University Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources and Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology
11:30 a.m – Noon: Pretty but Pesky: Spotted Lanternfly in NC Spotted lanternfly is on the move! This quickly-spreading pest is a threat to landscape and agricultural plants and is a huge nuisance. Learn all about it's biology, identification, and what you can do to stop it. Kelly Oten, Assistant Professor & Extension Specialist, Department Of Forestry and Environmental Resources, NC State University
12:00 – 12:15 p.m.: Sign for Continuing Education Credit and End of Workshop
