Carolina Canopy Workshop- Tree and Shrub Health

We are excited to present our first workshop in the 2020 Carolina Canopy workshop series. Join us for this half day workshop on tree and shrub health and learn from the experts about common concerns with soils, insects, and diseases that affect our urban canopy and landscape.

Dr. Kevin Chase is a reasearch entomologist with the Bartlett Research Laboratory with many years of experience in forest entomology, ecology, and arboriculture. Katie Rose Levin is the Executive Director for Trees Durham and has over 10 years of work experience in natural resource management and arboriculture.


 

AGENDA

8:30 - 9:00 a.m.       Registration and Welcome

9:00 - 10:00 a.m.      Pests and Insects in the Urban Canopy                          

Dr. Kevin Chase, Entomologist, Bartlett Tree Experts

Dr. Chase will explain the common pests affecting NC tree canopies and landscapes, such as scales, aphids, caterpillars, bark beetles, and other wood boring insects.  He will also provide an update on the spread and control of emerald ash borer and spotted lanternfly.

10:00 - 10:15 a.m.    BREAK

10:15 - 11:15 a.m.   Common Tree & Shrub Diseases and Management                         

Dr. Kevin Chase, Entomologist, Bartlett Tree Experts                         

Identification and management of several common tree and shrub diseases will be explored, including phytophthora canker and phytophthora root rot, boxwood blight, bacteria leaf scorch, foliar leaf diseases, and brown vs. white rot.

11:15 - 11:30 a.m.   BREAK

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  Soil Management for Tree and Shrub Health  

Katie Rose Levin, Executive Director, Trees Durham

Information related to urban soils will be discussed, from testing to management and remediation.  Katie Rose will also explain important beneficial soil species.
