Soil is arguably the most important component for long-term tree health and survival. The field of soil science is vast, and encompasses microbiology, hydrology, chemistry, etc. During this discussion we will review the composition of a typically healthy soil and breakdown the key components of how urban/suburban trees interact.

12:30 - 1:15 p.m. Tree Plating Challenges
Kevin Heifferon, City of Greenville
Using downtown Greenville as the backdrop, Kevin will present the different challenges and issues of his tree planting program. Discussion will include tree pits, vandalism, tree grates, positives and negatives.
1:15 - 2:00 p.m. Soil Management During Construction
Mark Livingston, Arborguard Tree Specialists
This presentation will discuss the management strategies, process, and tools that we have to manage tree preservation in the built environment. Mark will showcase projects from Georgia and South Carolina to highlight options available for soil management.
