Tree Risk Assessment and the Impact of Risk Perception
Arborists and tree care professionals commonly use visual risk assessments to assess a trees likelihood of failure, likelihood of impacting a target, and consequences of failure. There is a high degree of uncertainty with regards to how a person’s intuition, previous training, and level of expertise affect the outcome of an assessment. Similarly, very little is known as to what extent risk perception and personal bias may influence recommendations, mitigation, and the overall management our urban forests. The research presented throughout the talk explores the accuracy of the current and most commonly used tree risk assessment methods and the subjective nature of assessments.
