Jun 21, 2022

8:30 am - 12:00 pm

Agenda

8:30-9:00 a.m.         Registration/Check-in

9:00 –9:05 a.m.       Welcome

9:05 - 10:05 a.m.     Boxwood Culture and Management, Matt Borden~ Bartlett Tree Experts

Love it or hate it, folks seem to have strong feelings about their boxwood. This session will cover some of the culture and history of boxwood, with an emphasis on management in the era of boxwood blight. It has been over a decade now since this particularly destructive disease was first found in the United States. Luckily, we have learned much since then, causing a shift in the narrative of how we approach the disease in our landscapes.

10:05 - 11:00 a.m.    What the last 15 years at the NC State Plant Disease and Insect Clinic can -- and cannot -- tell us about tree and shrub problems in North Carolina, Michael Munster~ Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, NC State University

Some landscape trees and shrubs are known for their susceptibility to particular diseases or disorders, while others seem to get a wide range of problems. In this talk we'll explore examples of both, and we'll review how to effectively take samples for disease diagnosis.

11:00 - 11:15 a.m.   Break

11:15 - 12:15 p.m.   It's Alive! Or is it?,  Barbara Fair ~ NC State University

More often than not, abiotic disorders rather than insects and diseases cause our plants problems. And, they typically gang up on the plants so it can often be a real challenge to figure out what is wrong and what can be done. In this presentation we will discuss the most common abiotic issues our woody plants face, what you can do to prevent them, and what to do once you know what is going on.
